Accounting for wear over time in metal parts

Replication inspection

Over time even the strongest metal parts will experience some form of wear. It is important to monitor this. Failing to do so could result in an unexpected failure and unnecessary downtime. One of the best ways to identify and track the wear is replication inspection.

Surface condition

The idea with RI is it can replicate the surface microstructure of various metal products. What this allows the tester to do is get an accurate analysis of the damage, including creep. It can look for all kinds of wear, the development of corrosion, and much more.

One of the issues with metal products is the flaws may not be visible to the naked eye. In fact, they may be subsurface. As a result, a visual inspection may come back clear when there is actually a problem beneath the surface. If that is the only form of maintenance that is taking place, it could leave an issue to slowly worsen until a part fails and a facility has to shutdown.

How much service life is left?

Regular replication inspection makes it easier to track wear over time. This can be useful for one important reason; it can give you a more accurate idea of how much service life is left in different parts. It is important not to over or underestimate this. The first will result in you replacing parts sooner than necessary, meaning you will be paying more than you should be. The latter means you are running the risk of an unexpected failure.
