Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

Ultrasonic testing is a versatile method of Non-Destructive testing that can be applied to most materials, either metallic or non-metallic, with the ultrasonic testing of welds being one of the most common practices. Format NDT uses ultrasonic testing equipment that can utilise sound waves to detect cracks and defects in parts and materials, as well as to determine a material’s thickness, such as measuring the thickness of a wall of pipe.

Using this method Format NDT can accurately evaluate surface and internal discontinuities such as:

  • Cracks
  • Inclusions
  • Laminations
  • Voids
  • Lack of Fusion
  • Blow Holes

Ultrasonic testing is usually done when a radiographic inspection cannot be used as it only requires access to one side and does not have to be cut, sectioned, or exposed to damaging chemicals.

This technique can also be used for the ultrasonic weld testing using an ultrasonic thickness tester to determine the exact position of internal, hidden discontinuities in a weld.

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) is an advanced ultrasonic technique using an array of crystal elements which are individually excited under electronic imput. The beam of ultrasound can be steered electronically through the weld or object being examined. Because of this a multi-dimensional view can be generated showing the size and location of any flaws in a portioned view through the object.

Because the beam angle and focus can be controlled and manipulated this method of examination is extremely efficient in terms of speed and flaw detection.

The past decade has seen much increase in the use of Phased Array technology mainly due to the increase in computing power required for the rapid excitation of the multiple element transducers and the need to process much larger data files the phased array scans produce.

Phase array provides high speed electronic scanning, improved inspection capabilities through software control of beam characteristics and improved defect detectability.
